Shielding

Ask for support | Talk to someone | Get practical help

Whether you are shielding yourself or for a loved one it is important to consider your needs. Many of the remote working resources for individuals and teams may be helpful if you are working. If you are not currently able to work on site but are looking to support in a new capacity get in touch with us at [email protected] or speak to your employer.

Returning from shielding: This guide is designed to offer you supportive advice to help you to transition back into the workplace in a safe and comfortable way.

Things that might help

  • Talk to someone: Fast-track bitesize coaching may help with specific issues, or consider setting up a longer term relationship and other listening services available. You may also want to consider counselling or a referral to our Mental Health and Wellbeing hubs for more bespoke assessment and support.
  • Connect with people: Shielding can be isolating whether you are working or not. Make time for people who uplift and energise you, inside or outside work.
  • Remember your rights. The Equality Act 2010 gives protection to staff with protected characteristics which include many long term conditions and disabilities. Access to work schemes may help or adjustments to your working practices.

Resources

  • Review local and national guidance: It may be possible to make adjustments to your role, be redeployed into a role where you can work from home and these arrangements can be reviewed regularly.
  • If you cannot work you should be placed on sickness absence: This is in line with the NHS terms and conditions of service.
  • Supporting a safe return. Guidance and support is available to both shielding staff and their managers.
