Leading and Supporting a Remote Team

Ask for support | Talk to someone | Get practical help

Whether your team members are all working remotely or you have more flexible or split arrangements there are some things that can help bring you together as a team.

Things that might help

  • Stay connected. It can get lonely working remotely. Think about ways to stay connected and socialise with your colleagues. An online coffee break, game or walk with your team may do just the trick.
  • Remote leadership is different. Clarity, communication and individualisation are important and helping people find hope and optimism is ever more part of your role. Consider this article and video.
  • Notice when people are struggling. Encourage rest and recovery. Create safe spaces to listen and share challenges and worries. If people are not coping well consider referring them for additional support within your organisation or to one of the Mental Health and Resilience hubs.

Resources

  • StartWell>EndWell: Introduce this practical approach to support your colleagues and to promote effective teaming particularly during challenging periods.
  • #HAY (How are you) resources: Introduce regular sessions focused on decompression and wellbeing and share the visual guide and aide memoires with your team.
  • Effective teamworking during a crisis:  This short video and guidance is applicable to remote and co-located teams.
  • Access facilitated support for your team either through your organisation or here. Sometimes bringing someone in with an external perspective can be helpful.
