Anchor institutions are large organisations that are unlikely to relocate and have a significant stake in their local area. They have sizeable assets that can be used to support their local community’s health and wellbeing and tackle health inequalities, for example, through procurement, training, employment, professional development, and buildings and land use (Kings Fund).
The Sout East Leadership Academy, as part of a commitment to reducing health inequalities, commissioned a desk top review into the leadership styles, behaviours, and skills, that are required to ensure an impact on reducing health inequalities through the activities of being an anchor institute. The aim of the research was to;
- Understand the latest research and evidence about leading in anchor institutions
- Identify the leadership behaviours that create the conditions for change to happen
- Understand models of leadership that have supported the advancement of anchor institutes across agreed deprived communities
- Understand the leadership journey that multi sectors have taken together to have an impact in this area
