Leadership Circles Train the Trainer

Leadership Support Circles

Leadership Support Circles (LSCs) arose from the work of the NHS Health and Wellbeing taskforce which was established to anticipate and respond to the needs of NHS staff contending with the Covid-19 pandemic. LSCs were developed to provide a safe space for NHS people managers to come together virtually in multi-disciplinary groups of between 6 and 25 people to share experiences, to be heard and sometimes to work through complex challenges. The intention was to offer psychological support for those with people management responsibilities during the COVID-19 crisis, drawing on the wealth of evidence around the value of safe spaces to share experiences in a structure way and the critical importance of effective supervision for employee wellbeing during crisis periods. In addition to the 10 original leadership Support Circles, a further 4 are being designed.  These will focus on:

  • Burnout / pandemic fatigue
  • Agile working
  • Hybrid working / ‘team leadership in the new world’

The Offer

To help embed the capability and build the capacity to deliver these programmes locally, and to make this model sustainable, the Leadership Academy has commissioned a train the trainer programme with the aim of training cohorts of facilitators across the ICSs.  It is anticipated that an ICS wide delivery model would be agreed across the trained facilitators linking into facilitators that were trained initially to deliver the national programme. These teams would work together to provide a programme calendar of leadership circles accessible to all staff from all organisations. These circles could then be provided as key HWB programmes over the winter months and beyond. They can be delivered as standalone session, or sessions that are embedded within other leadership programmes. This approach also supports and models the (continued) development of an ICS infrastructure that looks to use local resources in a collective way at system level, where this makes sense.  This model of delivery has been successfully implemented across Kent and Medway ICS and across South East London.

In addition to the facilitator and train the trainer training, an additional session to facilitate local implementation models at ICS level will be offered.

The benefits from establishing a partnership approach with other organisations in the ICS include:

  • Joint facilitation of circle sessions, additional opportunities for good practice sharing and greater resilience in the event that a trained facilitator becomes unavailable
  • Development of a model of working across the ICS, which demonstrates collaborative system working, enabling strong trusting relationships to be built across peer groups
  • Better segmentation where there is a larger pool of facilitators with different backgrounds
